Why the long face? This Sunday Colchester will see our first ever pantomime horse race. Oh, yes, we will!
Age Concern Colchester have come up with the genius that is the Auld Nag’s Folly Pantomime Horse Race, generously supported by Fisher Jones Greenwood Solicitors. For the past few months teams have been making, shoeing, grooming, breaking-in and training their very own pantomime horse, with help and guidance from Age Concern, all in preparation for Sunday’s events.
The High Street will be full of ‘stables’, where the horses can relax pre and post race, and lots of stalls, each promoting their own charity. There will be a champagne breakfast for participants, and the day will start for spectators with an official opening ceremony and horse parade at 11:00am.
Local companies are pledging £50 a piece to sponsor a horse blanket for each nag, and they’ll be specially designed rosettes in each entrants’ colours, so you can proudly show who you’re supporting. If you don’t know yet, never fear, tomorrow (Tuesday, 12th September) the Gazette will be publishing a full race card with details of each horse, their colours and temperament so you can make your selection. Some of the gee-gees have even been trained to do dressage! (Check out the videos at the Facebook page.) Make your choice wisely, though, as there will be an opportunity to take part in Age Concern’s Tote on the day!
We absolutely love that the town will be given over to a host of happy people, all doing their bit to raise money for local charities, and having lots of silly fun. It’s the perfect Sunday outing. We’ll see you in the crowd!
