Get shot of all the clothes you have gone off or (ahem) grown out of, and get a lovely new (to you) outfit instead!
If you operate a one-in, one-out system when it comes to your wardrobe (and if you don't, now's a good time to start!) then Saturday's event at the marvel that is the Arts Centre will be totally up your alley!
Mother and daughter team (and Colchester ward councillors!) Jessica and Lesley Scott-Boutell came up with the idea. "Most of us have items hanging in the back of the wardrobe that we're not going to wear... impulse buys," says Lesley. Too right! Who hasn't got a fair few frock-horrors stashed away? And if your child is anything like mine, she'll have grown out of shoes before they have even been worn, let alone, scuffed, and it seems such a shame to get rid, doesn't it? But one woman's just-a-bit-too-tight-round-the-thighs mistake, is another's oh-that's-sassy summer sizzler, and one child's didn't-get-to-wear-them strappy sandals are another's that's-just-what-my-daughter-needs helping hand!
Frock swaps are also a great way to reuse and recycle our clothes ensuring they don't go to landfill. And mindful that charities don't miss out on money they would have made if the clothes were donated, the event has a charity collection on the day, and those who are taking rather than swapping are encouraged to make at least a £2 donation. Tea, coffee and biscuits are also sold to help fill the good-causes' coffers.
It's an easy concept - bring what you no longer wear and take items that you will, and the last half an hour is open to everyone (non-swappers and charities) to take whatever they can use so that the hall is cleared. But it's also great fun, and a way of bringing the community together to share a laugh and a sense of commonality. (No elbow jostling, please!)
So, bring along your unwanted, clean clothes, shoes and accessories (women's, men’s and children's - all textiles welcome) that you have no further use for and enjoy the fun and thrill of swapping them for your new favourite outfit! See you there!
Drop off your items from 9.30am - 10.15am. Swapping begins at 10.30am (Non-swappers and charities from 11.30am - 12pm)
Free admission for swappers
£2 minimum donation to charity from non-swappers
