We have far more in common than that which divides us - let's get together as a community to prove the late Jo Cox right.
This Saturday, June 17th at GO4 Cafe at the Rec and this Sunday, June 18th at Firstsite, Colchester will hold two of the more than 100,000 events being staged throughout the UK, to bring the entire community together and breathe life into the words of the late Labour MP Jo Cox: We have far more in common than that which divides us.
Paella in the Park is a collaboration between Emmaus Colchester and GO4, who warmly welcome all Colcestrians to an afternoon of fun from noon. Bring your favourite dish to share with others or partake of the freshly made and authentic paella. There will also be live music and upcycling activities for children. Canine friends are also welcome!
Then on Sunday, running from 11am to 5pm, Firstsite will host an event, organised under the umbrella of the Jo Cox Foundation, which will be held inside the gallery and on its back lawn. The event was initiated by Labour Councillor Tim Young but a cross-party team helped to put it together, including Annie Feltham, the Lib Dem deputy leader of Colchester Borough Council and Conservative Councillors Darius Laws and Daniel Ellis. Alexandra Berriman from the Mercury Theatre has seen to the logistics.
Entertainment will be provided by West End musicals stars, as well as public readings from the Mercury Theatre Young Company. There will be a mobile bowling lane, kids rides, face-painting and delicious delicacies served up by the ever-popular Syrian Café, run by Refugee Action Colchester. Additionally there will be stalls representing a variety of local community groups, including SOS Bus Colchester, Outhouse East, Age Concern Colchester and, of course, your very own Colchester Life!
So let's take the chance to celebrate all that we have in common and find out about all the great stuff going on in our community. Whether you pop to the park on Saturday or gambol to the golden gallery on Sunday, grab the opportunity to get together with neighbours and enjoy the sunshine with new friends.
See you there!
