Our local ‘coffee with a conscience’ cafe is an independent business responding to a local need – and they could do with your help.
For some time now the good people at the GO4 Market Café in Trinity Church have been running a ‘pay it forward’ breakfast scheme, where customers can add an extra fiver to their bill to pay for a cooked breakfast and hot drink for a homeless person, or simply make a donation when passing by. The café has been amazed by Colchestrians’ generosity and is serving anywhere up to 20 breakfasts a day to those who could really do with a hot meal.
Pete Hope, director, explains that they also aim to offer volunteering opportunities to help people gain skills that can be transferred into paid work, and they currently have three individuals progressing through the system. By dishing up a warm meal, a chance to make phone calls or charge a phone, provide an introduction to other agencies and even offer work experience and on-the-spot training, the café is hoping to remove some of the obstacles to employment that the homeless and couch-surfers face. They believe the importance of a nutritious meal and a friendly ear should not be underestimated.
With that in mind the the café aims to extend the services they offer to those most in need by offering a soup bar which will dish up hearty hot soups and stews in the afternoons, bridging the gap that many homeless people currently face before the night shelter opens, especially during the chillier months.
Pete explains that, while the café breaks even on the breakfast scheme, they need help raising funds for the large soup kettles and chaffing trays needed to get the soup bar up and running, that the business couldn’t justify buying on its own. They are also hoping there may be some kind allotment owners and keen gardeners who have surplus produce they would like to offer as ingredients, and donations of non-perishables, such as baked beans, would also be very gratefully received.
