Local Business Heroes - Sam Ross Yoga/Raspberry Swirl Massage

Two holistic indie businesses for the price of one! Samantha Ross's vision has always been to help people to make positive changes in their lives. And for Colchester Life cardholders, a spectacular offer to help you on your journey!

What brought you to Colchester? What is your background?

I have lived in the Colchester area most of my life although I moved away to attend university I came back after graduation. I have enjoyed several different career paths on the way to owning my own business. I’ve worked in various residential and supported care settings and also worked with adults with learning disabilities. I commuted to London for many years working as a legal secretary and then a legal document specialist before becoming a Secretarial Manager in an international law firm.

Why did you decide to start an independent business in Colchester?

I wanted to radically change my work/life balance and felt that starting my own business would give me the platform to help others as well as giving me back that balance. I left my City job, invested in a professional holistic massage therapy course and once I had graduated, travelled to India to deepen my yoga practice and train to become a registered yoga teacher.

Tell us some more about your business and your vision for your company.

I run two businesses, Sam Ross Yoga in Colchester and Raspberry Swirl Massage in Manningtree. My yoga classes cover asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditation. We also touch on yoga philosophy & history. Classes are accessible for complete beginners and run during the day, evening and weekends. Classes are held in locations around Colchester and full details of current classes can be found on my website. I also hold workshops for those who wish to deepen their practice and learn more about yoga.

I see clients in my massage therapy treatment room in Manningtree two days a week. Since qualifying as a massage therapist in 2013 and then as a sports massage therapist three years ago, I have built up a busy practice helping clients rehabilitate from injuries as well as bringing them relaxation through holistic massage. I have recently qualified as a Reiki practitioner so will be bringing this beautiful energy work to my practice in 2018.

From the very beginning my vision has been to help people who are looking to make positive changes in their lives. Whether that is through yoga, massage, reiki, meditation or a combination of all of these. For me, being in a position to serve others, to give people the space and means to make positive changes in their lives is the best part of what I do. I can’t imagine doing anything else now.

What do you like about running a business in Colchester? What are the challenges?

I love running a business in Colchester. There is so much variety in our town and wider area and that means there is room for so many different types of businesses. There is a great feeling of connection amongst the people I know and work with in the wider holistic health/yoga/well-being community. Everyone is really supportive and encouraging of new ideas and ventures.

The challenges are the traffic and parking. Finding good venues with enough free parking for a full yoga class is a continual challenge!

Where’s your favourite place to eat/drink in the town right now?

My favourite place to eat right now has to be Garden of Vegan at Good Souls Bakery Cafe & Restaurant at the top of Queen Street. Their date drops are the BEST!

My favourite place to drink good coffee is Caffe Sala on Eld Lane.

Where is Colchester ‘best kept secret’ in your opinion? What do you like to do most when not running your business?

Colchester’s best kept secret is the sheer range and quantity of events going on every day - It’s truly amazing! Colchester Life is a great way to bring these events to more people’s attention and help everyone to keep on thriving.

When I’m not working on my businesses I like to spend time with my family and friends, attend events around Colchester and relax, either reading or listening to podcasts. I also spend some time every day on my mat either practising yoga or in meditation.
