We've made it through Snowmaggedon, so shake off that cabin fever and get yourself out to enjoy what Colchester has to offer!
Lots going on in our lil ol' town, Colcestrians, and as always, something to appeal to everyone. Let us put you in the know!
First up, a comedian at the ever-reliable Arts Centre this Wednesday who breaks the usual 'Mock the Week' mould. Yes, Simon Evans has been on Live at the Apollo and written for 8 out of 10 Cats, but he's not your average left-wing maverick. In the eloquent comic’s new touring show, titled Genius, he bemoans the fact that genuine geniuses are few and far between. “The show is about the notion of actual genius being hard to find anywhere, and about a collapse of any ambition for intelligent discourse or analysis in public life which is where it really matters.”
And this suave air of sophistication is cultivated by his slow sipping of Scotch on stage. “It’s nice to have a drink when you’re performing live, " he says. "To talk for an hour and a half on stage without one is just a lecture. It’s more affable and amiable to do a performance with a drink. But you do have to measure it and whisky is quite easy to just neck. The ideal drink to have on stage is sherry, because it has that little bit of sugar to keep the energy levels up, but I might have it in a whisky bottle and glass so that it looks a bit more manly." Tickets are still available here.
If you're more into the macabre, then Charter Hall has come up trumps this Saturday, with the Circus of Horrors, which has received rave reviews from everyone from Graham Norton to David Hasselhoff (and if that's not a recommendation, I don't know what is!). Blending horror, the bizarre, burlesque, and dark magic this is the type of show you may watch from between fingers over your eyes, but we'll bet you'll be glad you did! And if you put in the code CIRCUS241 at check out here you'll get two tickets for the price of one! Be quick because there's just a few tickets left!
Of course, this Sunday is Mother's Day. (Yes, THIS Sunday!!) if you haven't picked up a pressie yet, then never fear - we have some options for you. Does she love a cuppa? Then get yourself to Cardamon Tea Lounge on Wednesday for a workshop on Tea - The Journey from Bush to Cup, and pick up a special blend just for her. Arty crafty mum? Then head to the Bazaar in its new home at Firstsite on Saturday to choose a unique handcrafted gift from a local artist or maker. And if you've got little ones aged 1-7 to entertain, while doing something for their mum, then head along to the Mummy Rocks pop-up event, also at Firstsite, after lunch on Sunday. They'll be crafts, dress up, sensory play and a disco.
There are tons of other things going on in town this week - a 'crafternoon' at Wimpole Road church tomorrow, a talk at St Leonards on the Hythe on Saturday, a new musical at the Headgate or a Marvel & DC themed quiz night at Harris+Hoole on Friday - just check our events listings for details of these and more!
